Last week was a long week. A long week in which I ignored David a lot because I was busy updating my resume to include “has experience administering suppositories”.
On Saturday I went to Target to pick up a few things, including a new water cup for David. I looked at the selection and did something I told myself I would never do. I bought a cup with a character on it. And why was this something I was so opinionated about before I had children? Why is a blue and red cup so much better than a cup with a cartoon? Especially because those cartoons played a big part in getting us through the week.
I bought him a Lightning McQueen cup, and when he woke up from his nap, I tiptoed into his room and gave it to him. He rubbed his eyes and turned the cup around and around. He couldn’t believe his good fortune.
Me: David, I have something for you.
David: What you have?
Me: I have a surprise.
David: What prize?
Me: I have a new cup for you.
David: [holding the cup, turning it around] It’s Lightning Queen!
David kept looking at the cup and turning it around, He took a drink from it and held it out to get a better look.
Then he rested his head on my and then I realize this was a cup he’s seen this cup before. Admired. Coveted.
David: Mommy? Did you take this from Benjamin?
[Semantics is a new series of posts designed to record the conversations, mispronunciations, and sweet misunderstandings I’d probably forget otherwise.]
That’s a cute little story! I love it when I get a new cup/toy/treat for my son. He has learned that the word “treat” means that something special is coming his way…
I just found your blog from the little things link up and I’m so glad I did! I am trying to get back to running after years of not and now a kid. Looking forward to following along your running and your sweet family!

Love this little story!
My little is 18 months and just really getting into repeating things. I love the mispronunciations (though I know we have to help correct them, it’s so hard not to laugh).
Point: She grabbed a rug to shake it outside (a favorite activity) and said “Shit shit shit”. Ah, Hayley, you mean “Shake Shake Shake”… 🙂
haha! that’s so cute! you HAVE to write it all down otherwise you’ll forget it!
