March Madness

Can you feel the chaos? We are in the midst of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. It is madness, yes, but when you live with a teething baby and a toddler who WILL NOT nap, you barely notice. My entire life feels like a sporting event  with upsets and unexpected runs; a tournament with the appellation “madness” feels like Thursday at dinnertime in my house.

All weekend Tom had onandon conversations trying to convince David that basketball is as good as — no, better than! — cartoons.

David: Daddy, can we watch George, please?
Tom: NO! We’re watching BASKETball! Look David! He got the basketball in the hoop! This is fun! So exciting!
David: I don like football, Daddy. I wanna watch George.
Tom: David! This is basketball! There’s not much time left! What’s going to happen!?
David: I don want football. Can we watch George, please, Mommy?

I have ties to two teams that made the tournament this year, and VCU is already out. That leaves UVA. Like all Hokies who use emotions to fill out brackets, I always pick UVa to lose in the first round regardless of RPI. But I didn’t fill out a bracket this year, so I get to pick whoever I want during the game. Most Hokies aren’t really sure how to handle this UVA basketball success, because cheering for UVA feels like betrayal. I’ve thought about it, and this is what I decided. I want UVA to win. Even though it means the next few weeks will be full of orange and blue and Wahoowablahblahblah.

::wince::

Here are my reasons:

A win for UVa is a win for the ACC, the state of Virginia, and my sister and her husband who went to UVa. Being glad about those things doesn’t make me a bad Virginia Tech fan.

In fact, I think it makes me a better Virginia Tech fan, because when the Hokies are ranked, we want everyone in our corner. Even though it seems counter-intuitive, I think cheering for the Wahoos is the Hokie thing to do.

[However, UVA plays Michigan State next, which is where Tom’s mom went to school. Perhaps that’s reason to be a Spartan for a day?]

    I had to look up the definition of appellation.

    It was a struggle for me to put them in my sweet 16 bracket, but I hope Michigan State wins the next round…

    Yeah, the same “when will this game be over so we can watch Jake and the Neverland Pirates” has been the fight at our house. But I don’t really like watching b-ball either, so I have also been guilty of “are you watching this on the antenna or on the AppleTV? Bc I’d like to watch netflix on the iPad.”
