X-games

For the past several months I’ve been spending my Saturday mornings doing long runs, so the week after my race, I bundled up on Saturday morning and went to the park with some kids (many of whom were part of our Track Club).

The trip to the park is called X-games, and it’s an informal ministry that’s been going on for more than a decade. The premise is simple: go have fun with kids.

There’s some structure to it; we have relays and do push-ups, and at the end there’s a Gospel presentation. But most of it is just being silly and having fun.

I used to go to X-games all the time, but this was my first time in maybe a year and a half.

It was great to see the kids, but time has changed things a bit. There were new faces and names I’d forgotten. A few kids have moved, and others have grown up a lot in that year and a half. They’re speaking better English, and a few even have boyfriends…

Several adults from our church come to X-games each month to help, and one of the leaders used to come to X-games as a kid. Now he’s partnering with some of leaders who were there when he was younger; proclaiming God’s goodness and faithfulness alongside them.

Being out there in the cold with the kids made me ache to be more involved with these kids and the neighborhood. Seeing them Saturday was a reminder that God is good and at work, and that’s something I want to be a part of.

Being a stay at home mom is great, but there’s also a temptation to turn inward. My day revolves around David and, in some ways, that’s a very good thing. In some ways, it’s necessary and important and the season of life I’m in. But there’s also balance, and Tom and I both want to show our son that God is at work.

And there’s no better way to do that than to jump right in the middle of it.

X-games is happening again this Saturday, December 15. If you want to join, contact someone at www.wepc.org.

What a wonderful ministry! It sounds like there are ways you can definitely be involved as part of your (#1) ministry at home, rather than detracting from it.
