Looking back at 2012

It’s time for New Year’s Resolutions. Actually, a week and a half ago was time for New Year’s Resolutions. We’re running a little late because we were hit with the horrible respiratory virus that’s leveled most of Richmond.

At first Tom and I just thought we were getting a little cold. Ten days, 18 boxes of tissues and two rounds of antibiotics later we now know we had Coldmageddon. The best way I can tell you how bad this was is: after this illness, I now believe in germs.

I’ve always put way too much stock in my immune system. I’ve never been fanatical about washing hands and I don’t believe in hand sanitizer. I share drinks and forks and roll my eyes at those people who use a paper towel to open the door in public bathrooms. But now I totally get that kind of caution because, turns out, germs are brutal.

To us, it seems like 2013 is just starting, so let’s get on with it.

Before I set new goals, I want to look back at my goals for 2012. You can read the full set, along with explanations here and my 6-month check-in here.

I think I did alright.

  1. Finish my book editing job by April
I didn’t finish in April. I finished in September. But the important thing is that I FINISHED.
  2. Get back to my pre-pregnancy weight
Done. Thank you breastfeeding and running.
  3. Answer all e-mails within two weeks
    Ugh. I’ve regressed.
  4. Give up Diet Coke
I was doing awesome, but I’ve had some backslides. I’m going to the dentist next week, and am petrified of cavities, even though it would mean a morning off.
  5. Read 26 books
This goal was more about balance, not about actually reading 26 books. I read 20, and my reading-life balance is no longer a problem, now that I have graham crackers smashed in my carpet to worry about.
  6. Keep up with daily Bible reading
This is still a struggle, and I didn’t make much progress in 2012.
  7. Go to the gym two times a week
Dude, we totally had this one covered until Coldmageddon. But did you know there are GERMS at the gym? I know. Ew.
  8. Pray for David every single day
This has been such an easy change. David and I now pray several times a day together, and with Tom at bedtime. It’s been the easiest switch to his schedule ever.

These were my plans. (You can read about the difference between goals and plans in my original post.)

  1. Grow my hair out
Check! My hair is long and unruly and always in a ponytail.
  2. Understand my camera better
    Still no progress here.
  3. Reduce clutter, organize and make our house more liveable
I took this pretty seriously, but I move slowly with home decisions (as in, a shelf fell off our wall in August and i still haven’t decided what to replace it with). We’ve donated a total of 21 bags of things to Goodwill, yard sales and our church’s clothing closet. We’re getting there, but this is a lifelong process I think.
  4. RUN!
    Yeah! Goal accomplished!

It’s not 100% but it’s not bad, eh? After this year I think my goals will be a little more simple, but also sort of the same.

This post is already long enough, so I’ll check back in tomorrow with my 2013 goals…which gives me one more day to stay in my pajamas all day and eat dessert for breakfast.

You did so well with your goals! Sorry that you guys have been sick- we’ve managed to keep it at bay so far this season.

Amanda, you know those “read the Bible in a year programs?” I’ve never been able to do them. Apparently there are ones that you can get to send you an email each day with your reading. It is a bit pathetic, but seriously, what day do you not check your email? I think I’m going to go for it. I make new year goals a week late as well!
