I was a chaperone for Mary’s class trip to the pumpkin patch this year. It was my first time chaperoning an elementary school field trip — in my kids’ school you have to express interest in chaperoning, and the teacher picks volunteers out of a hat.

I was not selected to go to the zoo, the Nutcracker, or the fire station, but I was glad I could be with Mary on her first field trip.

The kids were doing their morning work when I arrived, so I put my hand on Mary’s back to greet her.

The little girl beside her looked at me and said, “Mary, is that your mommy? She’s really pretty.”

Mary looked up at me, then looked back at her friend, “She doesn’t always look like that, she just got fancy for the field trip.”
