A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2016

David / If you follow me on Instagram, you already know we gave David an long-overdue back-to-school haircut this week. As I was cutting it, he said, “Mommy, don’t make my hair pretty. Make it cool. Make it like a triangle with flames shooting out.”

And so I put down my scissors and we gave him his first-ever buzzcut (with flames shooting out).

Mary Virginia / Full disclosure, this photo is staged. (I tried to get her to sit in the grass but she was worried the grass might be wet.)

She looks like she’s reading a book in the yard, but what she’s really doing is glancing down at her book in between complaining and asking to get up, even though I told her she looked like little Mary Lennox from The Secret Garden.

Thomas / I caught a skink and showed the kids. Mary Virginia was horrified (obviously) David wanted to keep it (obviously) and Thomas was fascinated. He watched it until it scurried off, and then he cried.
