29/52

The whole forecast is full of hot, humid days and the second Tom opened his mouth to complain about it I shouted YOUJUSTSTOPITRIGHTNOW!

Because remember a few weeks ago? When we were all bummed that it was JULY but too cold to swim? REMEMBER THAT? Kids, we’re sweating for the next two months and WE’RE GONNA LIKE IT!

A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2016.

29-52 - david (1)

David / We still haven’t done formal swim lessons (it’s on the list of things to do, along with hanging art, arranging our book shelves, cleaning up from breakfast…) but he’s getting so, so good in the water. Every single time he swims he gets better, more confident. We let him swim in the deep end now (supervised, very supervised) and he can touch the bottom, swim across, and even tread water for a bit. He’s a blur in the pool, an underwater, splashing, ecstatic blur.

29-52 - mary 2

Mary Virginia / And here’s Mary Virginia, keeping her hair dry. She likes swimming in theory, but in reality she’d rather eat snacks or play on the steps. Here she is pretending the inflatable balls are her kids. They’re playing in the water table after the nap they took on the cushion behind her.

29-52 - thomas

Thomas / We have little floats for babies but Thomas wants nothing to do with those, thank you very much. His pool style is faux swimming while I hold him and he dips his face in the water. He also doesn’t mind being flung in the air.
